Local gym to host “Hero Workout” on Memorial Day in honor of fallen veteran while benefiting Veterans Count Maine
Maniac CrossFit in South Portland will host the “Murph” Workout, in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.
The “Murph” Workout is done in CrossFit gyms across the country on Memorial Day in honor of those who were killed in war. The workout is done as fast as possible (usually takes 40-60 minutes) and includes: a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats and a final 1 mile run.
“We have a handful of members here at Maniac that are veterans, and CrossFit itself is a very military based style of a workout,” said Brayton Chase, co-owner and head coach of Maniac CrossFit. “We often say in classes and especially when we do “Murph” or any Hero workout, that keep in mind as the workout begins to really get tough, it could always be tougher. We encourage them to really think about why they are doing this workout, in honor of all those that have fought for us.”
This year’s event will be held at Maniac CrossFit – 200 John Roberts Road in South Portland, ME 04106 on Monday, May 29th at 9:30am (workout will begin around 10am). All are welcome.
The workout was one of Murphy’s favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor”. CrossFit renamed the workout the “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who is described to have wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is. This year, the event gains extra meaning for Chase and the team at Maniac CrossFit as they hope to fundraise on behalf of Veterans Count Maine.
“Over the past three years we have done “Murph” here at Maniac on Memorial Day, and each year the event gets bigger and bigger. It is a great way to bring our community of members together and honor not just LT. Michael Murphy, but all veterans. So this year we thought it would be a great idea to bring in a local veteran campaign to just bring more pride and really help make a difference,” said Chase.
